San France Disco – Bringing Sweat Back to the Dancefloor (David Duriez Remix)

My favourite house song ever, I try and play it out every chance I get because it’s just such a banger.

San France Disco is an alias of David Duriez, so in effect he’s remixed his own song for this one. David Durez is a French DJ and Producer, whose productions range from techno and acid to pumping house and with over 100 productions under his belt, it’s safe to say he’s pretty good at it! As well as producing over 100 tracks he also runs a record label called Brique Rogue and has had a hand in helping labels such as Robosoul and Rz Muzik get started. He’s one of my favourite producers because you know whatever you get is going to be gold from him and this is no different.

Bringing Sweat Back to the Dancefloor is a cross of rolling acid and filtered disco. It starts with a rolling acid line before a filtered guitar line emerges through it, from the strumming along gently. As the song progresses the guitar and acid lines increase in urgency before the guitar dies off and all your left with the same rolling acid but with an added intensity. When this dies off slightly and the guitar returns it’s joined by a vocal line asking if “are you ready? To get on down” and this carries building before the vocals die off and all your left with is that guitar line and the acid. Absolutely glorious.

Avorton – Jogging ///

Avorton is French DJ and producer, who hails from an area called Seine-Saint-Denis which, is referred to as Neuf-Trois and is just next to Paris. He’s released a load of tracks on Increase The Groove, has been remixed by Joss Moog and featured on Rinse France. If this production is anything to go by then his star will only rise higher.

Jogging /// is a monster of track – breakbeaty and fabulously driven on by rolling synths. It starts off with just the high hats clattering before introducing the rolling synths gently in the back ground with the occasional crash signalling the introduction of another element such as the crushing drums or the synths. When the drums come in, they do so with a real rolling forcefulness making you feel like you’re being swept along in a percussive tide, the rolling sound of piano like synths in the background only adds to the urgancy of the track. It keeps rising and falling, each time with a new element joining and changing the perception of the track. This is a real tour de force of a track and the sort of thing you’d imagine hearing banged out at 5am as the sunrises.

DJ Pierre – What Is House Muzik (Jazzuelle’s Deeper Acid Mix)

DJ Pierre is an absolute legend of house music – he is one of the founding members of Phuture as well as being an accomplished DJ and Producer in his own right. Phuture are the group who discovered that by twiddling with the resonance, decay and envelope modulation on a Roland 303 you get a squelching twisting glorious noise which became known as Acid. This is thanks to their debut single “Acid Trax” which was reportedly played 3 times by Ron Hardy the first night they shared it with anyone – each time to greater effect. So yeah, DJ Pierre knows a thing or two about House music and Acid in particular.

Jazzuelle is a South African Dj and Producer, hailing from Cape Town originally but now residing in Johannesburg. He has released music on a multitude of labels including Get Physical and Atjazz Record Company. He also recently did a ballentine boiler room and is going to be playing a Mixmag Lab party in the coming weeks – he’s definitely one to keep an eye on. As is South Africa in general, a ton of great artists have come or are coming out of there at the moment.

The actual track its self is really nice mix of acid and gentle uplifting synths with some definite African influences coming through. It starts with a really powerful kick but with what sounds like wind chimes gently tinkling in the back ground, while added to the kick there are some mechanical sounding elements driving the track. Soon some very light uplifting sounding synths coming in, while a vocal asks “what is house music” repeatedly until an acid line comes creeping in but without wanting to over power the synths. It just keeps the whole track grounded and adds a bit of crunch where necessary and fades out to allow the track to breathe.

Big fan of this type of uplifting track and also of Acid – read enough of this blog and you’ll definitely find that out!

Le Knight Club – Rhumba

A disco infused house banger – that goes off whenever it’s played out. Listening to it through headphones makes you want to get up and party.

Le Knight Club is a band founded by Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo (of Daft Punk fame) and Eric Chédeville aka Rico. They started the band in 1997 and released a number of filtered, disco infused electronic songs, including a remix of Technologic by Daft Punk, until 2002 when they stopped producing for a number of years. They reformed in 2015 to produce some songs for the film “Gates of the sun”.

Rhumba was released in 2002 on the Crydamoure label which, is also run by the two band members. It starts with a filtered rasping slapped bassline and a muted guitar line over the top, this then builds up and the filter drops off and the full power of bassline can kick in. It’s a real stomper and just keeps pumping and rolling along oozing with funk and disco. You can definitely hear the Daft Punk influences throughout this and the rest of their productions, really good stash of weapons to have at your disposal if you need to get the dance floor up and moving.

Philip Glass – Glassworks – 01. Opening

This one is a bit of a change of pace – it’s actually a piece of classical music. However, it’s such a great bit of minimalist music it actually works really work in a DJ-able song.

Philip Glass is an American composer whose work is best described as minimalist and he himself describes as “music with repetitive structures” (can you guess why I like it?). He’s won numerous awards for his compositions including a golden globe for the Truman Show soundtrack and a BAFTA for The Hours soundtrack.

Glassworks is a beautiful piano piece which rolls on and on. It starts with a rolling pattern with a chord stab that progress up and down an octave as signal for the rolling notes to move up and down octaves as well. It’s 6 minutes of pure unadulterated bliss – I’m waiting for the time when a video surfaces of someone playing this to a sunrise as it has that exact kind of euphoric relaxed, yet intense vibe. I’m a real sucker for pianos in house music, so that probably explains why I like this so much.

Glassworks is available for mp3 or CD purchase on Amazon

DJ Python – q.e.p.d

DJ Python aka Brian Piñeyro is a New York based DJ and Producer, who makes a wonderful variety of electronic music. It’s labeled as leftfield on beatport but, that doesn’t do it justice – it’s a wonderful mix of ambient, alternative percussive elements and breakbeat drums. A majority of his songs are under 120bpm as well which make them great for more chilled out day sessions.

q.e.p.d is taken from his album Dulce Compania which came out in 2017 on as the first release on the Incienso label. Incienso was founded by Anthony Napels and Jenny Slattery (according to RA). q.e.p.d is an excellent dichotomy between dreamy, floating dubby sounding synths and a mechanical drum machine, it makes you feel like you’re having an outer body experience in a factory and all you can hear is the machine’s rhythmically working away below you. It starts off with the rhythmic drum machine pounding away a simple beat with a rolling beep layered over the top of it (sorry I know it’s a poor description but I can’t think of any other way of describing it) and a regular thump of bass hitting every 1st and 3rd notes. Behind the noise of the drum machines you can hear a swirl of synths coming in hard and then slowly degrading into the next stab of synth. These are then joined by a maraca shaking and the introduction of more severe sounding synths over the top of the swirling backdrop. The synths that come in are more a kin to the breakdown in a techno-trancey song but, they’re used in such as way as to give a progression element to the song by coming and going rather than overpowering it.

As you might be able to tell I really like this one. I only found it the other day and just needed to share it.

E.B.E – Distraught

E.B.E aka Lucas Rodenbush is an American DJ and Producer, who also produces under Entity and Moonchild. He’s produced an absolute ton of tracks all of which are very deep and groovey house numbers.

Distraught is definitely a deep and groovy number, with it being released on the Plastic City Label that’s no surprise (they specialise in deep groovy proper tech house and are well worth looking at – Terry Lee Brown Junior’s releases in particular are a highlight for me). Distraught starts off with a pumping kick and rolling bass with stabbing synths. This continues but with muted synth chords barely audible above the bass provide a back drop for the stabbing synths to evolve into a more structured note patterns, while every so often an arp comes in behind with a “whoop”ing sound. This is the sort of song that you’d hear late into an all night set to keep the dancefloor moving without ripping up any trees. It’s a really good solid track that will go down a storm without needing any huge drops but, is done on pure musicality.

Stevie Nicks – Standback (Eli Escobar Disco mix)

Personally I’m a huge Fleetwood Mac & Eli Escobar fan so this combination of him and Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac is perfect. It’s one of those songs that’s always on my memory stick and I play it out every chance I get.

Stevie Nicks is the lead singer of the rock band Fleetwood Mac, and the song “Standback” is from her second solo album The Wild Heart which came out in 1983. The song is a staple in both Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac setlists to this day. The melody of the original song was written by Prince, although this is uncredited.

Eli Escobar is a New York based DJ and Producer, who specialises in Disco and disco leaning House. His DJ sets are phenomenal in their variety and diversity from disco to hip hop to afrobeat and his productions are very reflective of this and also the rich history of New York house music.

Standback starts off with a standard kick and high hat with a backing of the pitter-patter of bongo drums, before strands of guitar come creeping in before they are the main thing you can hear. Then a truly huge electro bassline comes in and the guitars drop off to be replaced by synth keys from the original before dying out and filtering back in while the vocals come in. When the song breakdown after about 4 minutes all that remains in the pitter patter of the bongos and the occasional guitar chords with some chopped up vocals before building itself back up into the vocals before dying out again to another breakdown based around the synth and guitars before kicking back in again. Eli Escobar has taken a banger and made it even better some how – a truly genius move from the New York DJ and Producer.

You can get a copy of it on Vinyl from Discogs for only a couple of quid (surprisingly) – find it here

Rayko – Dance to the Groove (Pete Herbert Mix)

Rayko is a Spanish DJ and Producer who has become internationally recognised for his high energy sets and productions. They are all heavily influenced by his love for all things Disco and from the sounds of the 70’s and 80’s, and are all bangers to be honest. He started his own record label in 2008 called Rare Wiri, and has had a string of releases from people such as Ichisan, Phoreski and Ilya Santana.

Pete Herbert is a DJ and Producer from the UK, he’s also one of the founders of the Maxi Discs record label. As a Dj his style spans house, disco, Balearic or as he would describe it – soundtracking music for sunsets or music for swimming pools.

Dance to the Groove lays out it’s stall early on, with some percussive drums mixed with the sound of cowbells, with the occasional vocal sample coming in saying “groove”. Then a huge wet and wobbling bass comes in and drives everything forward brushing everything in front of it aside. A filtered electric guitar, playing stabbed chords comes in over the top, before the vocal sample expands to say “dance on the groove” whilst still keeping the “groove” sample. A hugely funky track that is sure to set any dance floor on fire and get bodies moving. At only 110bpm it proves that tracks don’t have to a million miles per minute to be bangers and get people moving as seems to the case now.

The Real Thing – You Are To Me Everything (The Decade Remix ’76-’86)

The Real Thing is a British soul group begun in 1970 by Chris Amoo, Dave Smith, Kenny Davis and Ray Lake. They had a string of hits but, achieved international recognition for the You Are To Me Everything, reaching number 64 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 and number 1 on the UK charts.

You are to me everything is an old school funk and soul track, which is great. It starts off with someone singing “You’re the sweetest song that I could sing, Oh baby”, those of you who have heard Julio Bashmore’s breakout track “Au Seve” will recognise the “Oh Baby”. Some backing strings then join the singing, before some high pitched piano playing before the drums break in and it moves towards having the piano as the lead with muted guitar chords. This might be the sort of song that you’d expect to hear late night at a wedding but, it doesn’t stop it being an absolute cracker. At 107bpm, it could be good for a chilled out day party or to start off a disco set.

This is available on Beatport.
